Description

With the proper planning, experience, and equipment, winter camping can be a highly rewarding and enjoyable experience. Outfitted with snowshoes and Komatiks (traditional Inuit sleds), we'll head across the frozen waterways and snow-laden forests of Northern Ontario's backcountry in search of a perfect base-camp location. Once found, you'll have the opportunity to construct your very own quinzee (snow shelter) or help in the set-up of our woodstove-heated tent. After a refreshing night's sleep we'll head out on snowshoes and explore our newly acquainted winter world. Designed as an introduction to winter camping, our guides will cover everything from packing to ice safety, weather interpretation, wildlife tracking, and more.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1

09:15am: Arrive at parking lot for meet and great
09:30am: Guides will outfit you with your snowshoes and sled for your personal gear
10:15am: A "how to" ice reading and awareness discussion will be held on the lake
10:30am: We'll head out across the frozen lake to our base camp which is approximately 1km
11:00am: As a group, we'll set up the tent and lay out our base camp
12:00pm: Lunch
12:30pm: During this time, we'll work on firewood, camp set up, and shelter construction
03:00pm: This time can be spent to better your shelters, and our base camp
05:00pm: Dinner, learn how to prepare a wonderful winters feast
07:00pm: The remainder on the evening will be spent exploring the forest at night, looking for the northern lights, or simply enjoying the comfort of the wood-stove heated tent with new friends

Day 2
08:30am: Wake up it's breakfast time, help in the preparation of a warm hearty breakfast
09:30am: Time to pack up our day trip gear, and get ready to head out on a true wilderness snowshoe trip
10:30am: Snowshoe trip - We'll cross many frozen lakes, forests and rivers; for those that wish, we'll try our luck with map and compass navigation
12:30pm: Warm trail lunch, and then return to base camp
02:00pm: Arrive back at base camp and pack up for our return home
03:30pm: Arrive back at parking lot and load the vehicle for our return home

The Northern Wilderness trip is perfect for beginner or intermediate snowshoe enthusiasts looking to develop their skills and confidence in the backcountry. Outfitted with a variety of snowshoe styles, we will break our own trail through the frozen waterways and diverse snow-covered forests of Northern Ontario, all the while pausing to interpret the many ecological wonders of winter. Halfway through the trip we'll break to sip hot chocolate around a campfire and enjoy the silence and beauty of Ontario's backcountry. A truly Canadian experience, the Northern Wilderness trip provides an opportunity to develop your snowshoeing techniques in a northern wilderness environment.
